The short answer: almost always just the tire. The wheel your mower came with is a stamped steel dish with a hub in the middle, and unless it’s bent, cracked, or rusted through, it will outlive several sets of rubber. A tire-and-wheel assembly from a big-box store sells you a new tire, a new wheel, new bearings or bushings, and sometimes a bag of hub adapters — four things, when the only one that wore out is the first.
That matters because the wheel is the part driving the price. We sell tires and tubes, not wheels, so we have an obvious stake in that answer — which is why the rest of this is a checklist rather than a sales pitch. Here’s how to tell in two minutes whether your rim is fine, what it looks like when it genuinely isn’t, what the tire alone costs at the sizes we stock, and how the job actually goes in a driveway.
What a mounted assembly actually is
Read a box-store listing title all the way to the end and it tells on itself. They read like “tire and wheel assembly on a 6 x 4.5 wheel,” “3 in. centered hub with 3/4 in. bearings,” “3 in. offset hub,” “universal bushing kits.” Notice that almost none of that describes the tire. Diameter, hub type, bore, bearings, bushings — those are all specs of the wheel, and the wheel is the part you already own, still bolted to your mower, already the right one.
There’s a reason the category exists. An assembly is genuinely the easier product to sell: it needs no mounting, no bead work, and no size lookup. Convenience is a real thing to pay for. The question this article answers is whether you’re paying for it twice.
The two-minute rim check
Do this before you buy anything. If the tire still holds air, you can do most of it with the wheel on the machine; if it’s flat and you’re about to pull it anyway, do it with the tire off, because the worst of the damage hides under the bead where the old rubber has been trapping moisture against the steel.
- Run a finger around the bead seat — the inch of rim the tire’s edge presses against. It should be continuous, solid steel. That inch is where a rim holds air.
- Sight down the flange, the outer lip, all the way around. A flat spot or a wave means it met a curb or a stump.
- Look at the center, where the hub, bore, or bolt holes are. Cracks radiate from bolt holes and keyways, and a bore that’s gone oval will never run true again.
- Check the valve stem hole for a sharp rusted edge — that edge saws through a new tube.
- Tap the barrel with a screwdriver handle. Solid steel rings. Rotten steel thuds.

When the wheel actually is shot
Four findings end the argument. If you have one of these, buy the wheel — and don’t buy the tire until the wheel is settled, because a new tire on a scrap rim is money down the driveway.

This is also the one case where a mounted assembly is straightforwardly the right buy: if the wheel is scrap, you need a wheel, and a wheel with a tire already on it saves you the mounting. Just make sure the hub matches — more on that below.
The arithmetic

Tires go on in pairs more often than singly, so the numbers that matter in practice are $66 for a front pair at 15x6.00-6 and $94 for a rear pair at 18x8.50-8 — delivered, because shipping is free on every tire to the lower 48 with no minimum. One tire ships free too. At five or more we quote freight by phone instead.
Now the only comparison worth making, and you can do it on your phone in the store aisle:
One honest caveat, because it comes up: at the very bottom of the assembly market the subtraction can come out near zero, or even negative. Those are unbranded tires on wheels of unspecified bore, built to hit a price. For a beater that mows a half-acre and lives outside, that can genuinely be the right call, and we’ll tell you so on the phone. What you’re giving up is a known brand, a known ply rating, and a wheel you know fits.
The part that bites people: bore, hub, and bearings
The tire size and the rim have to agree, and so do the wheel and your axle — two separate fitment problems. Buying the tire alone solves the second one for free, because you’re keeping the wheel that already fits.
- The last number in the tire size is the rim diameter. A 20x10.00-8 needs an 8-inch rim. That number is not negotiable, whatever else you change. Our guide to reading tire sizes breaks the rest of the numbers down.
- The axle bore is the trap. Mower axles run 5/8, 3/4, and 1 inch, and a wheel bored for the wrong one is a paperweight. That’s why assembly listings advertise adapter and bushing kits — they’re admitting the wheel doesn’t universally fit.
- Hub offset and length change how the wheel sits. “Centered hub” and “offset hub” are different parts. Get it wrong and the tire rubs the frame or the deck sits crooked.
- Bearings versus bushings versus a plain bore — three different constructions, and yours is whichever your mower was built with.

How hard is the swap, honestly?
Harder than nothing, easier than people fear. Budget half an hour for your first small tire and about ten minutes for every one after that, with hand tools you probably own: a way to break the bead, dish soap, two tire spoons, and a ratchet strap. Two things to know before you start. The bead is the whole job — the tire itself goes on easy once soaped, and everyone who struggles is fighting a dry tire. And the maximum seating pressure molded into the sidewall is a hard ceiling, not a suggestion; if the bead hasn’t popped on by that number, let the air out and start over rather than adding more.
A shop with a machine is worth the money on a tire rusted hard to the rim, a stiff 6-ply in cold weather, or any wheel you’re unsure of.
