TR-13 vs. TR-15: the valve stem your rim actually needs

TR-13 fits a 0.453″ rim hole, TR-15 fits a 0.625″ hole — the split runs by rim diameter, not by how old the machine is. How to measure your hole in 30 seconds, and which stem our stocked sizes actually use.

The short answer: TR-13 is the standard valve stem on small-equipment tubes — mower, ZTR, garden-tractor, and small-trailer wheels, an 8″, 10″, or 12″ rim with a 0.453″ valve hole. TR-15 is the heavier stem on antique-tractor front wheels — a 15″ or 16″ rim drilled for a 0.625″ hole. The rim tells you which one, not the tire size or how old the machine is. Measure the hole and you can’t get it wrong.

TR-13 and TR-15 are named for the hole, not the tire

The difference between TR-13 and TR-15 is the diameter of the hole they’re built to seal in the rim — not the tire size, not the machine, not the era. Both are rubber, snap-in valve stems, and from six feet away they look identical. TR-13 is sized for a 0.453″ hole and measures about 0.46″ across the stem itself — it’s the same core and thread as a car tire’s valve, which is why your gauge and compressor chuck already fit it. It’s rated to 60 PSI and covers passenger, light-truck, and lawn-and-garden sizes, which is most of what rolls through this shop. TR-15 steps up to a 0.625″ hole and a noticeably fatter 0.65″ stem, also rated to 60 PSI, built for front-tractor and heavier lawn-and-garden wheels. Push a TR-13 into a TR-15 hole and it just sits there loose — there’s no seal, and it’ll leak or blow out under pressure. There’s no universal stem that splits the difference; the rim picks one or the other.

Measure your rim’s hole in 30 seconds, no gauge required

You don’t need a valve-hole gauge to sort this out. An ordinary tape measure or ruler gets you there:

  1. Pull the old tube, or find any spot on the bare rim where you can see the punched hole clearly — off the machine is easiest, but not required.
  2. Lay the tape flat across the widest point of the hole and read the number.
  3. Just over 7/16″ (0.453″) — that’s a TR-13 hole. A clean 5/8″ (0.625″) — that’s a TR-15 hole. The two aren’t close enough to eyeball wrong once you’ve got a tape on it.
  4. Still have the old stem? Skip the hole and measure the stem body instead: about 0.46″ across is TR-13, about 0.65″ — visibly fatter in hand — is TR-15.

Which stem our stocked sizes actually use

Every size we carry a matching tube for uses one of the two, and it sorts cleanly by rim diameter — no odd exceptions in our stock. Here’s the mapping for the sizes we see most:

The split follows the wheel, not the era

It’s tempting to think TR-15 is “the old one” and TR-13 is “the modern one,” but that’s not the actual line. Every 6″, 8″, 10″, and 12″ rim we stock a tube for — mower fronts and rears, ZTR wheels, garden-tractor rears, small trailer wheels — takes a TR-13, whether the machine rolled off the line last year or in 1975. The TR-15 shows up specifically on the 15″ and 16″ front wheels of antique row-crop tractors, because those wheels were drilled for the larger stem generations ago and nothing since has had a reason to change it. So don’t sort by “how old is this machine” — sort by rim diameter, and the answer falls out every time.

Buy the tube by tire size — the stem comes with it

You don’t have to separately hunt down a valve stem. Every tube we stock ships with the correct stem already built in for its size, so once you know the tire size on your sidewall, you’re done — no extra decision. TR-15 is a heavier stem sized for a 0.625-inch hole, used on antique-tractor front wheels. The two are not interchangeable: a TR-13 sits loose and cannot seal a TR-15 hole.
